Signers of the Declaration
Roger Sherman was born in Newton, Massachusetts, on April 19th, 1721. His ancestors were originally from England
At the time of his birth the population of the colonists had reached 475,000. Also black slaves had recently been introduced for the first time in the Louisiana territory. Roger was born into a middle class family, and a good portion of his education came from his fathers rather large library. When he was 13, Stoughton, Connecticut, the town he lived in, built a grammer school which he attended for a time. Roger Sherman became a successful landowner and was interested in politics, so he became justice of the peace and later the justice of the Superior Court in Connecticut. He was eventually elected into the Continental Congress in 1774 and was very active during the war. He became well respected and was given the opportunities to sign the Declaration of Independance, the Articles of Assosiation, the Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution, in which he represented Connecticut. He did not risk anything in signing the Constitution that I can find. From 1784 on, he was the mayor of New Haven, Connecticut until he died of typhoid in 1793, and was buried in the New Haven Grove Street Cemetary.
